Overview

At Murray-Brown Laboratories, we use highly sophisticated and sensitive assays to provide you with accurate Pathogen and Indicator Organism results quickly, allowing you to make informed decisions about releasing your product into the market with confidence.

Our advanced PCR by GENE-UP® & BAX® can detect as few as one viable cell in a sample, delivering results as soon as the next day.

Innovations in indicator organism quantitation using Petrifilm® also allow results as soon as the next day and 3 days for yeast and mold, instead of the traditional 5 to 7 days.

Select from various proximate analyses to verify label claims.

Satisfy safety regulations by analyzing for contaminates such as aflatoxins, mycotoxins, pesticides, or residual solvents.

Turnaround Times given are in Business Days

We also offer Allergen Analysis to help you meet safety standards.

Results Interpretation

Routine testing is important to develop baseline data so that out-of-spec products can be identified.

Murray-Brown Laboratories can assist in interpreting this data and troubleshooting acute spoilage incidents.

  • Pass Criteria

Pathogens (STEC, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Aspergillus) results that are negative, absent, or otherwise non-detectable are considered acceptable.

Salmonella spp. limit for raw chicken value-added products is 10 CFU/g

Producers commonly set indicator organism limits at <10 to < 100 CFU/g; however, limits for produce are typically much higher (< 100,000 CFU/g).

    Metals:

      • Arsenic: < 1.0 mg/kg
      • Cadmium: < 0.41 mg/kg
      • Lead: < 1.0 mg/kg
      • Mercury: < 0.20 mg/kg
  • Other Limits

For mycotoxins, pesticides, and residual solvents, please refer to internal or vendor specifications, or consult state, local, or federal regulations specific to your industry.

FAQ

What sample size (25g, 125g, or 375g or MicroTally®) should I analyze?

Larger sample sizes are much more representative of the batch they come from; therefore, we generally recommend analyzing larger sample sizes (375g for STEC and Salmonella; 125g is the largest sample size offered for Listeria monocytogenes) to ensure comprehensive food safety testing.

How should I prepare and ship my sample?
  • Sample should represent real-world product as received by the end customer and/or be homogeneous with the batch it represents.
  • Packaging should maintain sample integrity by preventing exchange with the atmosphere.
  • Ship next day or 2nd day, avoid Saturdays and weekends.
    • If you must send for Saturday delivery:
      • Select Saturday delivery with priority service from the carrier.
      • Contact us to alert us of the expected delivery, including the tracking number.
  • If your product is normally refrigerated, pack with cold packs.
  • Non-refrigerated products can be shipped without cold packs.
  • Please do not use Dry Ice and do not freeze samples.
